Who may apply?

  • Credit-worthy Prestige and Premier customers. These may be salaried or having qualifying deposit amounts
  • Customers aged between 18 years and retirement (55 years for civil servants, 60 years for private sector employees and 65 years for professionals - lawyers, judges, medical doctors and university lecturers).

What fees are charged?

There is no facility fee on Credit Card however there is an annual fee of K400 on the Platinum card and K200 on Classic Card. For applicable usage fees, refer to the current tariff guide available at all our branches and sales centres or call 5950(toll free on MTN and Airtel).

Is there insurance cover?

Free Credit life insurance against death and permanent disability.

How to apply

Applications may be done at any Barclays Prestige and Premier centres.

What documents are needed?

  • Proof of identity (national registration card, valid passport or valid driver’s licence)
  • Latest three months payslips
  • Completed application form
  • A copy of the contract (if on fixed term contract).

You can receive free SMS alerts every time your card is used, when your minimum payment is due and even when your card needs to be renewed. It’s a great new service that saves you time and trouble and gives you added security too.

You’ll receive the following alerts:

Transaction alert

Every time your Platinum World Miles Credit Card is used at any merchant outlet you’ll receive a message. It allows you to check the details and also tells you immediately if your card has been used by anyone else.

Payment alert

This tells you when a payment is received by Platinum World Miles Credit Card and gives details of the amount.

Statement alert

With this alert you’ll always be able to settle your account on time. We’ll send you a message when your bill is due, how much you need to pay and the date by which we need to receive payment.

Renewal alert

When your Platinum World Miles Credit Card is about to expire we’ll let you know so that you can arrange to collect your new card in good time.

Credit Card Usage

Your Credit Card allows you the flexibility of either paying directly for goods and services or using the card to withdraw cash. In some instances, it will be more convenient for you to use your card at the point of sale (thereby avoiding additional cash advance charges).

However, in other situations, you may want to use your card to withdraw cash from any Visa ATM or Barclays Bank Branch.

When paying by card can be better

Your Credit Card can be used to withdraw cash as well as on POS machines. Advantages of using the card on a POS machine are:

  1. Convenience
    Wherever a merchant displays the Visa sign, you should purchase items using your credit card, as opposed to taking cash out of an ATM with your card. It will be Faster, more convenient and you will avoid the cash advance Fee.
  2. Safety
    If your wallet is lost or stolen, as long as you report to us immediately on +260 211 366 223 or +260 977 912 027, then you will not be held liable for any Fraudulent transactions thereafter.
  3. Cash advance fee You will incur this Fee of 5% of value withdrawn if you draw cash with your credit card.

When paying by cash can be better

There are, however, a number of circumstances when you can use your card to withdraw cash.

These include:

  • Immediate access to credit if cards cannot be used at a particular merchant outlet.
  • Immediate access cash in times of emergency
  • Fast access to foreign currency when you are abroad

Please note:
The standard cash advance fee is applied on all local and foreign cash withdrawals.

A credit card can be used as a substitute for cash, enabling you to enjoy the added benefits of safety, convenience and additional spending power with one swipe of your card.

Payment Options

By far the most important aspect of responsible credit card usage is ensuring that you make your monthly payments on time. By doing so you will reduce the chance of incurring late payment fees, and the more you pay each month, the more you can use your card.

The most convenient payment method is for monthly minimum payable amount to be debited automatically from your bank account each month by Direct Debit. In this section, we will explain the benefits of making payments punctually, as well as the different payment options available to you.

Making a payment

  2. Online banking
    Log onto BIR- Setup the Credit Card as a Barclaycard New Payee under the Pay a Bill option-Make the transfer

  4. Cash
    Over the counter in a Barclays branch

For cheque payments, please write your card number at the back. (Allow at least one working day for cash payments and two or four working days for any cheque payments ).

    The key to making Direct Debit work best for you, is to make sure there are sufficient funds in your bank account to cover you payment by due date. By doing so, you will also avoid any penalties that you may incur for late payments.

Please note: By making all your payments on time each month (easily done by Direct Debit), you will increase your chances for a credit limit increase over time due to a good credit history.

E-Statements

Understanding your statement

Every month you will receive a statement detailing your transactions for that month. This statement offers a clear picture of what you spend each month, helping you to budget.

Using your card abroad

One of the times when it really pays to have a Barclays credit card is when you are travelling abroad. However, there are still several do’s and don’ts which you should be aware of when using your card abroad.

This section contains details of what you should be aware of when travelling as well as tips on how to make the most of your credit card’s features and benefits on your travels.

Detecting and preventing fraud

Although Barclays Bank does its utmost best to prevent unauthorised and fraudulent use of credit cards, this will always be an area of concern for credit card users. In this brochure we provide you with hints and tips on how to reduce the risk of fraud happening on your account.

We will also tell you exactly what to do, should you suspect that your card has beenused fraudulently.

Taking preventative action

It’s not always possible to prevent fraud from happening, but there are a few steps you can take to make it more difficult for a criminal to capture your card or card numbers. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself from credit card fraud:

  • sign the back of your card as soon as you receive it.
  • carry your cards separately in your wallet (e.g. in a zippered compartment) or in a separate card holder.
  • keep a record of your card numbers, their expiry dates, our Customer Service numbers (+260 211 366 223 or +260 977 912027) and address in a safe and secure place.
  • keep an eye on your card when transacting, and get it back as soon as possible.
  • In a restaurant ask the waiter to bring the card terminal or card imprinter to you (or go with him/her to the till). Always keep your credit card in sight when paying for goods or services and ensure it is your card that is returned.
  • save receipts to compare against your monthly Platinum World Miles Credit Card statement. Please shred, tear or burn away receipts you do not require. Never discard legible receipts with your card number.
  • open statements promptly and reconcile accounts monthly, just as you would with your checking account.
  • report any questionable charges promptly and in writing to us.
  • notify the bank in advance in writing of a change of address.
  • co-operate with a merchant if asked to provide proof of ID.
  • notify the bank when you are going abroad.

Taking preventative action

It’s not always possible to prevent Fraud from happening, but there are a Few steps you can take your card or card numbers. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself from credit card Fraud:

Don’t

  • lend your card(s) to anyone.
  • carry cards on top of a handbag or in a pocket where they can be easily stolen.
  • leave cards unattended in a car or receipts lying around. Please ensure you destroy your card once expired.
  • sign a blank receipt. When you sign a receipt, draw a line through any blank spaces above the total.
  • write your account number on a postcard or the outside of an envelope.
  • give out your account number over the phone unless you’re making the call to a company you know to be reputable.
  • write down your Persona/Identification number (PIN) or divulge it to anyone.
  • let your card out of your sight.

Security notice

Please be assured that Platinum World Miles Credit Card is actively working to ensure minimum consequences For Fraud. We invest heavily in Fraud protection systems to protect you as customers. Should we notice any ‘irregular’ behaviour in your account usage, we may give you a call. Please do not be alarmed or best interests at heart.

If you think your card is lost or stolen, call us immediately on our Contact Centre number +260 211 366223 or +260 977 912 027. Responsible issuers like Barclays Bank Zambia will not charge you for any Fraud carried out on your card so long as you notify them as soon as you become aware of the problem.

Be aware

Credit and debit card Fraud costs millions of dollars around the world each year. While theft is the most obvious Form of card Fraud, it can occur in other ways (e.g. counterfeit fraud, card skimming), such as:

  • Your mail, including your bank and credit card statements, is stolen.
  • A ‘change of address Form’ is completed in order to divert your mail to another destination.
  • A fraudster goes through your trash to then use your credit card number to make illegal purchases.
  • You are the victim of a ‘scam’ that has the intention of tricking you into divulging your personal details.*

* One reported example Included customers being requested to call a premium rate number in order to win a ‘Free trip’. When they called, the customers were told to provide their card account details in order to qualify for the trip in the end, the customers never won a trip and fraud was committed using the card account details that they provided.

Glossary of terms

Amount Due

Any unpaid amount of the minimum payment due from the previous months.

Annual Fee

The annual fee charged for use of your credit card. The fee that you are charged is linked to the number of features and benefits available on your card and product.

Billing Cycle

The total number of days between the last due date and current due date on a credit card monthly statement.

Billing Date

The date on which your monthly statement is generated.

Cash Advance

The maximum amount of cash that your card allows you to withdraw from an ATM.

Cash Advance fee

A charge for using your card to obtain cash. This fee can be stated in terms of a percentage of the amount of the cash advance i.e., 5% against withdrawn amount.

Credit Limit

The maximum amount that you are allowed to spend on a credit card. It includes purchases, cash advances and any charges or fees.

Interest Free Period

If you pay your balance in full each month, the interest free period is the time the bank allows between the transaction’s date and the billing date. Transactions made closer to the billing date receive a lesser period than those transactions made at thebeginning of a billing cycle.

Minimum Payment Due

The minimum amount that must be paid by the due date in order to keep your account up to date. Your minimum payment due is 5% of the statement balance outstanding as at the statement issue date.

Transaction Date

The actual date when something is purchased or the date when cash is withdrawn.

Transaction Post Date

The date that a purchase, cash advance or payment is recorded on your account. This can differ from transaction date depending on how long the vendor at which you made the transaction presents the voucher for payment.

Over Limit

When the amount owed is greater than the limit on your credit card. Any combination of purchases, cash advances, fees or finance charges may cause you to exceed your credit limit.

Over Limit Fee

A fee of 10.0% charged against the exceeding credit limit on your card.

Overseas Transaction Fees

Where you use your card outside Zambia, you will be charged a currency conversion fee. The exchange rate applied will be the rate relevant to the day your transaction is posted to your account and not the day the transaction was made.
